My son and I are new to sailing. He has a 1969 Columbia 22. I'm looking for a boat as well. Came across a Columbia 22 that the mast is down. I didn't see a mast plate. We went back to look at his boat and again we could not find a mast plate. Does the mast just sit on the fiberglass roof?
Any help is greatly appreciated

I'm not much of a marine mechanic, but from what I can tell, you should see something there to step the mast on. I would think there's a support post in the cabin that would help indicate where on the deck the mast would step.

Paul -- I just had the mast down on my Columbia 22, and discovered there's an aluminum oval flange sort of thing that sticks up underneath and is attached to the top of the cabin. The reinforced arch underneath (inside) supports the weight of the mast, but there is no post directly underneath. Does that make sense? If you're missing the flange, you can order a hinged mast step online, I think for about 50 bucks. I should have done that, but didn't know they were available until after raising the mast once again. A hinged step would make raising and lowering a little easier. Saw it recently but can't remember where. If you're interested, I'll do some digging. Meanwhile, be sure to join the online Columbia 22 Yahoo group: groups.yahoo.com/group/Columbia-22We're all about fixing up our wonderful old C-22's there.
