Wanted: Rudder for Starfish. This boat was built by Fillip Mfg. in the 1960s as a competitor for Sunfish, but never caught on. Anyway, I need a replacement rudder. Contact david.bvyc@gmail.com

I make sailboat parts and have the pattern for a starfish and as a matter or fact am shipping one out on Monday. I can make you one from laminated Cypress( very stable and will not warp like one piece rudders) for $89 plus shipping. Sales tax would also be added if you're in Texas. If you prefer one piece mahogany I can do it for $105 plus shipping. You can see my work on my site jowoodworks.com Hope I can help, John

Davidbvyc, I'm not sure why you say the Starfish never caught on but there were ~4000 made. The last were made in 2005, John Fillip retired and still lives in San Angelo, Texas. I can supply original parts for your Starfish. Currently there are plans to start manufactuing the Starfish soon.

Hey DWF, are you somehow connected with Mr. Fillip? I wish someone would start building his Texas Tornado again. That was a cool boat. I found a red one one time that had been stored for 20 years - pristeen condition.
Alas, I sold it before ever getting to sail it. You can find pictures in the photo gallery here.
Glad to know he's still around and kicking. Nice man.

dflowers, I have the inventory from Concho Valley Marine and Fillip Mfg. Co. in San Angelo, Texas. Mr. Fillip started manufacturing boats in 1959 and most of the boat hardware and rigging is still available, imagine 60 years of boat rigging in one place. The only molds available are the Starfish and partially completed tooling for 23' retractable keel boat. All tooling, equipment, and boat parts are for sale. I am currently negotiating a deal to start manufacturing the Starfish again. It is not a done deal but hopefully it will happen. Unfortunately there is not any tooling for the Tornado. If a list were assembled for hotrod day sailors the Tornado would defiantly be on top of the list. It’s amazing the Tornado stayed in the water and did not take flight; it had a lot of sail for the size of hull. If anyone is interested I have one complete Tornado which sadly never saw water, it is yellow with a faded stripe sequence. The hull needs polishing and some wood work refinishing to have an almost new Tornado. The last retail price was $5K.

I have an older starfish sailboat with bronze rudder fittings. I dropped my rudder the other day and am looking for a replacement bronze fitting that is attached to the rudder. Anyone know if these rudder parts are available anywhere? Contact tsgehrig@att.net.

I'm looking for information about my boat, which contains the following information on the hull -
Fillip Mfg Co Boat No. 594570 1923 Austin San Angelo, Texas
I believe it is a Starfish as it looks very similar to a Sunfish. However, I can't seem to find reliable specs online. I put the boat dimensions at 13'9" LOA with a 48" beam. This doesn't seem to match what I've found via Google.
Can dwf or anyone else confirm from the information above the boat model or direct me to an internet resource? Does the boat number imply the manufactured year (i.e. 1970)?

dwf: How can I contact you directly re Starfish parts? We have a 1967 model (that thinks it's a lawn ornament) which we want to fix up for our Girl Scouts. For sure we need a new traveler and the proper size rivots. I'll be getting tog w/the other leader next month to pull all the parts out & see what else we'll be needing. Thanks, penny

My neighbor gave me a starfish hull and boom, but now I need to find all the other parts. Does anyone know where I could find used or new parts for a Starfish? Does anyone know how to contact DWF that had starfish parts for sale in San Angelo?
